Blacklight Magazine

This summer, I have been working on a very exciting project. At the end of my first year at UChicago, I was elected as the Editor-in-Chief of Blacklight Magazine. Blacklight Magazine is a publication of the University of Chicago's Organization of Black Students. The reason I'm so excited about this magazine is because its mission is something that I can wholeheartedly get behind: Blacklight Magazine provides a platform for the voices of underrepresented and traditionally marginalized students on campus. Having gone through the process of being hyper aware of my Blackness and woman-ness during my first year, I appreciate the fact that there is a publication on campus that is looking to publish stories like mine.

With that being said, I am happy to share that Blacklight is now accepting submissions for its fall issue. The first deadline is August 15th. The second deadline is August 30th. We are looking for just about every type of writing and visual art. Feel free to write about your experience as a Muslim student or a Transgender student or a Korean student. Also, feel free to write about your favorite Peruvian restaurant or Black-owned clothing line. Like the flyer says, we want it all. You do not have to be UChicago student to submit and you also do not have to be a college student. I had a few high school students reach out to me and I was pretty excited that this magazine also appealed to younger folks. Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter, @BlacklightUChi, to stay connected.

There is a really fantastic team of people working to put this magazine together. We are all extremely excited to show you the finished product come October. If you want to submit something to the magazine, please do! We need your writing and art to make this thing work. Send submissions to You can also email me, Stephanie, at that email address if you want to talk about a possible article idea, have any questions, or want to donate a couple stacks to make sure we can print this magazine. Happy writing!
